Press Release – November 27, 2024

State Attorney John F. Durrett announces that Victor Michael Cannon, having been found guilty by a jury of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, Introduction of Contraband in a State Detention Facility, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in October in Columbia County was sentenced on November 27, 2024, to five years in the Florida Department of Corrections.

On December 9, 2023, Mr. Cannon attempted to visit an inmate in Columbia Correctional Institute. After undergoing a routine pat down search, a correctional officer felt a foreign object on Mr. Cannon’s person. Law enforcement was contacted and a search uncovered approximately 40 grams, or 1.5 ounces, of suspected narcotics on Mr. Cannon’s person. Mr. Cannon was arrested on scene, and the bag of narcotics was sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis. It was later determined to be dimethylpentelone, more commonly known as the stimulant “bath salts”.

The case was investigated by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. The State of Florida was represented by Assistant State Attorney Eddylis Chico and Assistant State Attorney Phillip Kelley. The Honorable Melissa Olin presided over the case.
