State Attorney John F. Durrett announces that Charysy Copeland, having been found guilty by a jury of two counts of Aggravated Battery on Law Enforcement with A Deadly Weapon and Fleeing Police Officer in September was later sentenced on October 30, 2024, to five years in the Florida Department of Corrections followed by 10 years probation.
The defendant in this case was convicted of striking two deputies with her vehicle on October 10, 2023 after the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was called to remove the defendant from a rest area where she was purportedly living out of her vehicle. After striking the deputies, the defendant then fled north on I-75 in her vehicle. Deputies pursued the defendant with lights and sirens activated until she was finally stopped and arrested.
The case was investigated by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. The State of Florida was represented by Assistant State Attorney Eddylis Chico and Assistant State Attorney Phillip Kelley. The Honorable Melissa Olin presided over the case.
